Happy New Year

“So this is Xmas, and what have you done? Another year over, and a new one just begun. And so this is Xmas, I hope you have fun. The near and the dear one, the old and the young.”

This is taken from the first verse of John Lennon´s song, ”Happy Xmas (war is over).” And it is clearly relevant for 2016. It has been a turbulent year for our world. The crisis in the world doesn´t seem to get smaller, millions of people are still affected by war and injustice is all around us.

When a year comes to an end, I always look back on what I have experienced in that year. What have I done for others, who have I met, who has given me inspiration? It is important that we look back and set aside time to reflect on our impact. In a world where injustice increasingly affects us, it is important that we show solidarity and stand up for each other. We must take care of the people around us and we must take care of our world. We cannot tolerate everything that happens around us without thinking through; what can I do to help?

Therefore, I am fortunate and grateful that I get to be part of the World YMCA Resource Group on Environment. In 2016, I have met many of you who are working hard to make the world a slightly better place. We take climate change seriously and we are determined to not give up. We inspire each other, we inspire people we meet and we inspire everyone to continue the fight. Because we know it is a fight, and we know it will not be less important in the coming years. Therefore we should be proud of what we have accomplished in 2016. Whether it is our presence at COP22, whether it is the project in Belarus that the WGEI helped, or whether it is all the new-coming projects that will start and have started after the World YMCA Program Innovation Camp.

Thank you for your contributions to the group! For the inspiration you continue to give, for the efforts you do in your local YMCA. Thank you for believing that there is something greater than all of us, that there is a bigger picture that we are a part of.

Before I let John Lennon finish of this blog post- I just want to say that I am looking forward to the coming years, I am looking forward to seeing how big our reach can be. And let us not forget all the people that believe in something greater than themselves, who are suffering for the greater good, and who need people like us to stand up for them!

“A very merry xmas, and a happy new year! Let´s hope it´s a good one, without any fear!”

Welcome back in 2017- with new courage and new hope!

All the best,
Kjersti & Alvin
