Join us in New York and Bonn!

Dear Friends,

As you may know, the World YMCA has special accreditation to interact with the UN system. This gives us the opportunity to attend and address UN meetings of several kinds.

In 2017, there are at least two events that link with our 4 strategic areas of employment, health, civic engagement and the environment. For now, we would like to extend the invitation to interested YMCA leaders to attend the confirmed events:

  • ECOSOC Youth Forum: 30-31 January, 2017, New York, USA
  • UNFFCCC Climate Change Conference: 8-18 May, 2017, Bonn, Germany

ECOSOC Youth Forum

In January 2017, the ECOSOC meetings will take place. Several events will be organized in New York under the theme: “The role of youth in poverty eradication and promoting prosperity in a changing world“ with special emphasis on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The agenda is not yet defined, but expected issues are around health, employment and civic engagement.

We would like to extend the invitation to attend the ECOSOC Youth Forum/ ECOSOC related events to YMCA leaders from around the world interested in joining a delegation representing our Movement as well as to learn and interact with UN officials and other international organisations.

Our goals for this event are:

   Follow the events related to the Sustainable Development Goals  Have a better perspective on how YMCAs can engage with the SDGs  Have a personal learning experience about how these sessions works.

We have 10 places available and the conditions are:

 Each participant pays his or her travel and food costs.  The World YMCA will partially subsidize accommodation from January 29 until February 1. Total cost for participant is USD 65 in shared double room and shared bathroom very close to the UN headquarters in NY.

 The World YMCA do not organise/finance accommodation for periods outside of the indicated dates If participant wants to stay longer, we can provide information around accommodation.

 Participants will be provided with invitation letters and relevant documentation for visas.

 A mandatory preparatory webinar will take place for briefing participants in January 2016.

 Participants will be presented with agendas of different events so that they can build their own programme, as they like.

 We will give preference to participants interested in engaging with the World YMCA Resource Group on Health, Employment and Civic Engagement.

 Candidates shall send a bio to Romulo Dantas at romulo@ymca.int, a short essay containing their motivations to join such a meeting and copy of their passport by December 1, 2016. *Important: Registrations will only be accepted if endorsed by the National General Secretary (A simple confirmation e-mail is enough).

Criteria For selection:

 Endorsement of the National YMCA of origin to your participation in RGE*

 Availability to attend the meeting (consider visa issues)

 Genuine Interest for the themes and willingness to be part of the Resource Groups on Health, Employment and Civic Engagement

 Resources to fill the gap between the final costs and the support provided by the World YMCA

 In case of “tight” numbers preference will be given to female candidates.

Climate Change Conference, Bonn 

This is an annual conference on international climate change negotiations. The main focus of this meeting is the continuing debate on the implementation and follow up of the historical Paris Agreement which aims to reduce the carbon emissions and support the world to transition to a greener economy.

Our goals for this event are:

   Follow the events related to Education on Climate Change

   Gain better perspective and understanding of the main points to be negotiated at COP23.

   Track other youth work related to Gender Equity and Future Generations.

   Have a personal learning experience about how these sessions’ works.

We have 10 places available and the conditions are:

 Travel support of EUR 100 for travel within Europe/ EUR 300 from outside of Europe.

 Each participant will be provided 18 EUR/day for food for a maximum of 10 days.

 Accommodation (shared bedrooms and bathrooms or family homes).

 Candidates shall send a bio to Romulo Dantas at romulo@ymca.int, a short essay containing their motivations to join such a meeting and a copy of their passport by February 20, 2017. * Important: Registrations will only be accepted if endorsed by the National General Secretary around participation within the Resource Group on the Environment (A simple confirmation e-mail is enough).

Criteria For selection:

 Availability to attend the meeting (consider visa issues)

 Level of activity inside the Working Group on COP (Climate Negotiations)

 Ability to contribute to the achievement of the goals for our participation at the event

 Resources to fill the gap between the final costs and the support provided by the World YMCA

 In case of “tight” numbers preference will be given to women and for members who have been active on RGE for longer time;
